N R Narayana Murthy's outlook on India's concept on Change:
Was watching an interview of the Chief Mentor, Infosys Technology yesterday where he shared an amazing perspective on our (Indian's) outlook towards change.
He says, we take such a long time to deliberate on how the change which when implemented, will impact us and come up with multiple reasons as to why it should not be implemented which is deliberated endlessly ............ and by then it's often too late.
This Indian perspective, he says, stems from the fact that for a major part of the last 300 years, we have always been used to "someone else" making a decision for us (the Brits sitting 400 miles away in England used to make the rules and implement), which we used to follow .... which was the easy part. However, since the last 50-60 years since when we the onus of making decisions has moved to us, to making decisions for ourselves, it does take a real effort to convince all concerned and implement anything.
For reference, he quotes .... there have been 33 Conferences in the last 20 years on building a Captive Power plant in Bangalore .... however this yet remains on paper and on discussions/ deliberations.
Also interesting to note, he says ..... we have "our family", "our friends" but our outlook on the public infrastructure is very different .... it's "the Government's roads, bridges, railway" and hence we are not concerned to make a difference.
He recommends that we keep an open mind and look to people/ companies who do better than us ...... the day we change this outlook, we will make a huge difference !!!
